Hannah and Jake Graf made history last year as they were dubbed Britain’s first transgender couple to have a baby together. Ex-Army captain Hannah, who was one of the highest-ranking transgender officers in the British Army, and actor Jake, used a surrogate to have their daughter. The couple used Jake’s egg which was frozen while he stopped taking testosterone temporarily, and it was fertilised with a donor sperm. After little Millie was born last April, at the height of the first lockdown, the new parents spent plenty of time together as a family.

In that time, Jake and Hannah realised they both wanted to extend their brood. The surrogate who delivered baby Millie has also kindly offered to try and help the couple with a future child. So, Hannah and Jake have their fingers crossed they can have a second child and give Millie a sibling.

Hannah told Wales Online: ‘We’ve always said we wanted to get a little sibling for Millie and it’s something that we are going to try and attempt when we’re allowed to in the current lockdown rules. ‘We don’t know how it’s going to go, but our amazing surrogate has very kindly offered to try and do it again. Maybe there will be some good news later in 2021.’ Jake added: ‘We spent a lot of time last year surrounded by flowers, staring at her in awe. It was magic. ‘Having Millie has been an absolute dream. The last nine months have been an amazing. It’s something that I never thought would happen to me, and I don’t think Hannah thought it would happen to her either.’

Jake and Hannah both transitioned around the same time and met one another while doing transgender activism, quickly realising they had a spark. In March 2018, the couple got married after three years of dating. Before they’d decided to start a family, Jake had already frozen eggs which they decided to use for their surrogate. Jake’s mum helped with the costs of the £17,000 egg-freezing procedure and the egg was fertilised before the pair were together. After five years together, the couple decided to find a surrogate to host the embryo and they settled on a mum whose identity they wish to keep private. Hannah said the process to find her – which they did via the National Fertility Society – was a bit like dating. Hannah adds that their surrogate made sure Hannah was referred to as the mother for all hospital appointments, and made her feel like the mum.

In case you were wondering about how it all works, in the UK, surrogates are not paid but they can get expenses of up to £15,000 for any costs during the pregnancy.
